Top NATO Official Says 5,000 US Troops to Leave Europe (1)

The US will pull 5,000 troops from Europe with more likely to follow in the long term, NATO’s top military commander said Tuesday, confirming an earlier announcement by President Donald Trump.

“A fair number” of those soldiers will come from “the armored brigade combat team that is returning,” Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich told reporters in Brussels, referring to 4,000 troops that were supposed to be deployed to Poland.

He added that “the previously planned deployment of a long-range fires battalion” of around 1,000 soldiers to Germany “will be curtailed and will not start occurring.”
