Texas AG Probing Connected Cars’ Data and Privacy Practices

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a probe into several car manufacturers over the collection and sale of drivers’ personal data.

The probe stemmed from “widespread reporting” of car manufacturers’ “invasive and unmitigated” data collection practices, according to a Thursday press release announcing the investigation. Recent news reports and privacy complaints allege car manufacturers collect vast amounts of data about drivers, which they sell to third-parties including insurance providers.

Paxton—the first state attorney general to publicly announce an investigation into car manufacturers’ data privacy practices—called such practices “disturbing” and said they “merit a thorough investigation and appropriate enforcement.”
