Senators want to jumpstart bipartisan health care talks after rejecting dueling proposals, with fading expectations of meeting a year-end deadline to get a deal done.
The Senate voted down proposals on Thursday from both sides of the aisle to stave off an increase in insurance premiums next year in what lawmakers deemed a political messaging exercise. After the failed votes, senators said they were hopeful they could now negotiate a path forward that had a shot at reaching the chamber’s 60-vote threshold, but that those talks likely would continue after the Dec. 31 premium deadline.
