The Department of Homeland Security would receive millions of dollars for body cameras and detention center inspections under a funding bill that omits broader enforcement changes Democrats have pushed for months.
The Senate-passed legislation includes $20 million for body-worn cameras, aimed at expanding their use during immigration enforcement encounters, and $20 million for the DHS inspector general to inspect and oversee detention facilities.
The measure, which House Republicans quickly panned, would end the funding lapse that’s hobbled the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and other parts of DHS for more than a month.
