Two high-profile Democratic governors running influential states are well-positioned to enact new congressional maps favoring their party ahead of the November elections, though only one of them appears to be on the road to success.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), who was sworn in Jan. 17, is new to the mid-decade redistricting fight, though her allies in the House of Delegates and state Senate have been preparing the ground for months. She could sign a more pro-Democratic map into law if Virginia voters ratify a proposed state constitutional amendment temporarily permitting the legislature to revise districts.
