Maine Democrat Gets Primary Foe After Backing GOP Spending Plan

Maine Auditor Matt Dunlap, a longtime state officeholder, will run in a 2026 Democratic primary to unseat Rep. Jared Golden, the only House Democrat who voted for Republicans’ short-term spending bill to keep the federal government open.

“We have a federal representative who consistently votes with the Republican Conference in areas that actually hurt people in Maine,” Dunlap said in an interview ahead of announcing his candidacy against Golden, who has a history of party-bucking votes and crossover support in a district that favored Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns.
