Lawmakers Weigh Changing GAO, Librarian of Congress Appointments

Lawmakers canceled a committee vote Wednesday on legislation to give Congress rather than the president the authority to appoint and remove the librarian of Congress, saying they wanted to go back to the drawing board to seek bipartisan consensus.

The talks between the top Republican and Democrat on the House Administration Committee mark a step toward changing how legislative branch agency heads are appointed, less than a year after President Donald Trump riled Democrats by firing the Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter.
