House Republican Predicts Backlash in Phone Record Lawsuit Fight

Constituent backlash will force Senate Republicans to undo a controversial provision allowing senators to sue the federal government for seizing their phone records, a leading House conservative said.

Rep. Mike Flood (R-Neb.), chairman of the self-identified “pragmatic conservative” Main Street Caucus, made the prediction in an exclusive Bloomberg Government roundtable Wednesday ahead of a House vote to strip the recently-passed funding law of the phone record language. The provision, added by the Senate but opposed by House Republican leaders, could directly benefit senators who were investigated in a Biden-era Jan. 6 probe.
