Chinese shippers would face increased scrutiny from the Federal Maritime Commission under bipartisan legislation approved by the House on Monday.
The House approved the bill by voice vote. It now heads to the Senate.
Carriers and shipping exchanges, which coordinate cargo contracts for vessels, would face more aggressive scrutiny over unfair trade practices under the bill (H.R. 4183), which also would reauthorize the commission through fiscal year 2029. The agency’s investigations are part of a broader effort to boost US-flagged carriers to undermine Chinese dominance in the global shipping sector.
