Greenland’s Leader Rules Out Ceding Sovereignty for US Bases

Greenland’s leader rejected giving up sovereignty as part of any deal to establish additional US bases on the Arctic island.

“We are not going to cede sovereignty,” Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen told reporters on Tuesday, when asked about possible arrangements for more US presence in Greenland.

His comments follow a BBC report last week that American officials are seeking to establish three new bases in southern Greenland. The broadcaster, citing a person it didn’t identify, said Washington has floated an arrangement under which the installations would be formally designated as sovereign US territory.
