Funding Bill Would Boost Program Aiding People With Energy Costs

Appropriators Tuesday recommended more than $4 billion in fiscal 2026 for a popular bipartisan program that helps low-income households with heating and cooling costs.

Legislation the House expects to vote on this week would provide $4.045 billion for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program, a $20 million boost over the current enacted level, according to a summary released by Senate Appropriations Committee Democrats. The move by lawmakers to include money for LIHEAP is a rebuke to the Trump administration, which last spring called for eliminating the program. The administration laid off its staff in April.
