President Donald Trump will send Congress his budget proposal for fiscal 2026 today, kicking off the legislative body’s work to fund the government beyond Sept. 30.
That starts with House and Senate appropriations committees’ budget hearings next week, where top Trump cabinet officials will testify. Trump’s “skinny” budget request may be light on details and require some follow-ups from the administration, a person familiar with his plans said.
Receiving the document allows lawmakers to start work on funding bills. But Republicans will put their own mark on spending priorities, House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) said.
