California Lawmakers Hope AI Bill Can Pass Muster With Newsom

A California lawmaker’s attempt to force AI developers to disclose public safety protocols faces a critical vote Friday that could determine if his nation-leading effort will fail for a second straight year.

State Sen. Scott Wiener (D) said he is negotiating with tech opponents on his measure (SB 53) ahead of a key vote in front of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. If the panel approves the bill, the state Legislature will need to pass it before adjourning Sept. 12.
