California Gig Drivers Can Unionize After Newsom Signs Bill (2)

Drivers for rideshare companies Lyft Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. will be allowed to unionize under legislation Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed Friday.

The bill (AB 1340) amounts to the largest single expansion of private-sector collective bargaining in the state’s history, according to the Service Employees International Union, which supported the measure.

“It has the prospect of organizing up to 800,000 members in the gig economy into the union to give them voice, to give them choice, to give them dignity and a say about their future,” Newsom told reporters during an unrelated press conference.
