Border Tumult Fears Rise as Some in GOP Seek Shutdown Leverage

Senators on both sides of the aisle are raising concerns that a government shutdown would snarl US-Mexico border operations as the Department of Homeland Security deals with an increase in migrant arrivals.

“It’s a tough situation at the border that gets even tougher if we shut down,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), adding that DHS would face hurdles transporting and deporting migrants. Murphy leads homeland security appropriations in the Senate.
