BGOV OnPoint: Record Number of Lawmakers Running for Governor

More than three dozen House members and senators won’t be defending their seats in the 2026 election — including a modern record number of lawmakers running for governor.

Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) last week became the 10th federal lawmaker to say they’d forgo re-election to the House or Senate to run instead for the top state executive job — the most in at least three decades, according to Bloomberg Government data. Schweikert’s opponents include House colleague Andy Biggs (R).
