BGOV Bill Analysis: H.R. 9238, Three-Week FISA Extension

The federal government’s authority to monitor foreign nationals’ electronic communications without a warrant would be extended through July 2 under H.R. 9238, as lawmakers remain unable to reach a deal to move a longer reauthorization.

The measure would extend for about three weeks Title VII of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which governs how US intelligence agencies can collect and search through phone calls, emails, text messages, and other electronic communications to or from agents of foreign governments and suspected terrorists located outside of the country. The authorities are set to lapse starting June 13.
