Guard’s Alleged Fight Club Won’t Face Prisoner Civil Rights Suit

A Pennsylvania inmate lost his civil rights suit alleging prison officials pressured him into participating in a fight club for their amusement because he didn’t file a prison grievance before suing, according to a Third Circuit opinion.

Desmond Keels alleged that Steve Buzas, a unit manager at Fayette State Correctional Institution. and other prison staff arranged fights between inmates in the restricted housing unit and bet on who would win. Keels said that Buzas tried to recruit him to participate a number of times, offering him his own cell, a prison transfer, and cigarettes as incentives.
