$150 Million Medicare Fraud Gets Hospice Manager 27-Month Term

The manager of a Texas chain of hospice and home-health agencies was sentenced to 27 months in prison for his role in a $150 million Medicare-fraud scheme to enroll thousands of unqualified patients into hospice facilities, the Department of Justice said.

Jose Garza, the operations manager of the Merida Group, directed employees to enroll patients with long-term incurable illnesses at the facilities by convincing them— falsely—that they had less than six months to live, according to a Thursday DOJ statement.
