Washington State Sues to Stop Courthouse Immigration Arrests (1)

Washington state’s attorney general is seeking an injunction to stop ICE and other federal agents from making civil immigration arrests at courthouses, a practice that allegedly causes witnesses and victims to avoid them.

The federal suit, filed by Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) Dec. 17 in Seattle, asserts that Department of Homeland Security arrests on courthouse grounds “deters victims and witnesses from appearing in court, prevents residents from vindicating their rights, hinders criminal prosecutions, hampers the rights of the accused, undermines public safety and the orderly administration of justice, and erodes trust in the court system.”
