Virginia defended the water protection permit it issued for the Mountain Valley Pipeline project, telling the Fourth Circuit that a challenge by conservation groups was filed in the wrong court and that state agencies ensured the project meets water quality standards.
The state imposed “the most stringent set of conditions Virginia has ever required for this type of project,” it told the court. Those conditions include “strict requirements on construction practices” and “demanding standards for restoration of waterbodies,” according to the brief filed Wednesday in the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
