Utah Lawyer Knew She Violated Ethics Rules, Court Says

A Utah lawyer who missed client deadlines and didn’t tell the client about a motion to dismiss was suspended for one year.

The Utah Supreme Court agreed with a lower court’s sanction and declined to reduce it after determining that Maria Santana knew she was violating ethics rules during the representation.

Santana agreed to represent the client in her personal injury action but wasn’t diligent and didn’t communicate, the court said.

She missed discovery deadlines even after asking opposing counsel for extensions and didn’t tell her client about a pending motion to dismiss, it said.
