Transfer of Sacred Apache Land for Copper Mining Gets New Look

An Apache American Indian nonprofit group will get another chance to challenge a government land transfer that could allow new copper mining in Arizona on land the Apache claim is sacred religious ground, after the full Ninth Circuit Thursday agreed to consider the case.

The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit vacated the June 24 ruling by a three-judge panel that the group, Apache Stronghold, isn’t entitled to a preliminary injunction blocking the transfer of a 6.7-square-mile plot of copper-rich federal land to a mining company.
