The Supreme Court agreed Friday to review whether the Fourth Amendment’s “community caretaking” exception to the warrant requirement extends to the home.

In a case involving police responding to a potentially suicidal man’s house, the high court will probe the reach of the rule that lets law enforcement avoid obtaining warrants in special circumstances. Officers frequently engage in actions unrelated to criminal investigations, the court has observed in recognizing the exception.
