South Carolina Six-Week Abortion Law Blocked After One Day (1)

A federal court blocked South Carolina on Friday from enforcing a one-day-old law that bans abortions after cardiac activity is detected, a development that typically occurs at about six weeks’ gestation.

Judge Mary Geiger Lewis granted a temporary restraining order barring the law from taking effect. Providers Planned Parenthood South Atlanta, Greenville Woman’s Clinic, and physician Terry Buffkin may therefore continue providing abortions without fear of criminal prosecution, licensing actions, or civil liability, at least for now.
