Sheppard Mullin Hires Irell & Manella Appellate Co-Chair

Jan. 7, 2020, 9:14 PM

Sheppard Mullin has hired David Schwarz, the former co-chair of Irell & Manella’s appellate practice, in its Century City, Calif. office.

Schwarz is one of several Irell attorneys to leave the high-end litigation firm over the last several months.

Schwarz represents clients in complex commercial disputes and appeals, class actions and corporate governance matters, and in state and federal regulatory proceedings. He’s argued 11 appeals in federal and state courts over the last four years.

One of Schwarz’s most recent wins came before the Ninth Circuit in Fowler Packing v. Lanier , an equal protection challenge to California state law AB 1513, a wage and hour statute.

“Several of us here at Sheppard Mullin have known—and respected— David for many years,” Sheppard Mullin Chair Guy Halgren said in a statement. “Not only is having someone of David’s caliber join our industry-leading group of litigators great for our clients but also having him join us now is a terrific way to start out the new year.”

Irell has lost two attorneys over the last year who have served as managing partners of the firm.

In August, Irell’s former managing partner David Gindler left the firm along with three other litigators to join Milbank in Los Angeles. Two months later, Ellisen Turner, a Los Angeles-based IP partner who served an abbreviated stint as managing partner of Irell & Manella, left to join Kirkland & Ellis.

In the last 12 months, the firm also shed the head of its global investigations and anticorruption practice, Jason Linder, who moved to Mayer Brown along with partner Glenn Vanzura. And the former head of Irell’s bankruptcy practice, Jeffrey Reisner, jumped ship for McDermott Will & Emery.
