Schwarzenegger Signs State Bar Dues Bill,
Says Bar Is Making Progress on Problems

SAN FRANCISCO—The California State Bar can begin collecting dues again now that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) Jan. 25 signed the annual bar dues bill (S.B. 55).

In October Schwarzenegger vetoed the bar dues bill and criticized the bar for lacking financial controls after a former employee embezzled $675,000. See 25 Law. Man. Prof. Conduct 568.

The veto also came after someone leaked the bar’s Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission decision to rate a former state lawmaker as not qualified for a judgeship for which Schwarzenegger was about to nominate him. Former State Sen. Charles “Chuck” Poochigian was later confirmed as a Court of Appeal judge....
