Rep. Jackie Speier Escapes Class Action Over Prerecorded Calls

Rep. Jackie Speier (D) escaped a proposed class action claiming that she used pre-recorded voice messages to call constituents without their consent, after a federal judge in California ruled that Speier has sovereign immunity.

Clyde Cheng sued the California congresswoman, alleging that she violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the California Unfair Competition Law when she called his cellphone using a prerecorded voice message asking him to participate in town halls. Cheng says he never consented to receive the calls and there were no instructions on how to opt-out of them.
