Pipe Developer Makes Unusual Plea to U.S. for $5 Billion Project

The company behind a delayed shale gas pipeline is making an unusual request to the U.S. government as it seeks to get around a court decision that threatens to block conduits crossing the Appalachian Trail.

EQM Midstream Partners LP submitted a proposal asking the federal government to take control of private land along the Appalachian Trail and the Jefferson National Forest. In return, the company is seeking the right to build a 3.6-mile (5.8-kilometer) segment of the $5 billion Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline through those lands, according to a regulatory filing Monday.
