Italian Groups Sue Philadelphia Over Indigenous People’s Day (1)

An organization representing dozens of Italian American groups says Philadelphia’s decision to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day violates their constitutional rights, according to a new suit filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Mayor James F. Kenney, when he issued the executive order on Jan. 27, said the story of Christopher Columbus “is deeply complicated.”

“For centuries, he has been venerated with stories of his traversing the Atlantic and ‘discovering’ the ‘New World,’” Kenney said.
