A federal judge in New York required a defendant to get vaccinated as a condition of her release from detention, saying it was a matter of public safety amid the pandemic.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff of the Southern District of New York said in a memorandum order the danger unvaccinated people pose to public health during the pandemic makes vaccination a condition of bail that is “reasonably necessary to assure safety of any other person and the community.”
Rakoff said later that “it seems obvious that the court has ample authority to impose such a condition.”
