Muslim Prisoner Entitled to Halal Meals With Meat

A Muslim inmate is entitled to halal meals that include meat, a divided federal appeals court held Feb. 15.

The Indiana Department of Correction’s refusal to give Roman Lee Jones halal meals containing meat substantially burdened his exercise of religion under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit said.

The department gave Jones the opportunity to eat food prepared in a kosher kitchen. “Since there is overlap in halal and Jewish kosher requirements, some Muslims—including Jones—find kosher food to be an acceptable alternative to a purely halal diet,” the...
