Latest ABA Survey of State UPL Committees
Shows Concerns About Online Legal Services

State bar officials and judicial authorities responsible for policing unauthorized practice of law regulations are increasingly concerned about potential UPL violations by online legal document services, according to a survey released in May by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Client Protection.

The 2012 Survey of Unlicensed Practice of Law Committees—the ABA’s fifth review of state UPL enforcement authorities—is the first one to specifically inquire into complaints “regarding non-lawyer providers” and the existence of “any binding or advisory opinion[s] regarding online legal services.”
