Justices Take Up Limits of Life Sentences for Juvenile Offenders

The U.S. Supreme Court will consider what findings judges must make before imposing life-without-parole sentences on juvenile offenders.

The issue will come before the justices on Tuesday in a case involving a man who, as a teenager, fatally stabbed his grandfather.

Brett Jones’ appeal from a Mississippi court ruling that will keep him imprisoned for life unless the high court intervenes “goes to the core of how we define justice,” said Marsha Levick, co-founder and chief legal officer of the Juvenile Law Center, which filed a brief supporting Jones.
