Justices Tackle Va. Voting Maps Redrawn for Racial Packing (1)

The voting districts for Virginia’s 2019 state House elections still seem up in the air after oral arguments at the Supreme Court today.

It wasn’t clear from the justices’ questions whether the court would undo gains Democrats and minority voters won in a lower court ruling that imposed new district lines for the upcoming off-year elections. Under the old plan, the House of Delegates is now divided 51-49 in favor of Republicans. The state Senate, though not at issue in this case, is similarly closely divided 21-19.
