Justices Suggest Place for State Lawmakers in Suit Over Voter ID

The U.S. Supreme Court seemed poised to allow North Carolina lawmakers to join in the state’s defense of a voter identification law, even though the state’s attorney general is already involved.

The case, argued Monday, is one of several this term where the justices are considering who can sue or be sued over controversial state laws.

Earlier this month, the court said in Cameron v. EMW Women’s Surgical Center, that one state agent can step in to defend a law when another state agent declines to do so.
