Judge Wins Immunity in ‘Empire’ Detention Center Filming Suit

The chief judge of the Cook County circuit court is immune from a lawsuit claiming the filming of scenes for the Fox television show “Empire” at the county’s juvenile detention center disrupted normal operations and harmed the detainees, a federal judge in Illinois said.

The show filmed several scenes at the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center in 2015. Former detainees T.S. and Q.B. brought a potential class action against Fox, Cook County, and various officials. Shooting interfered with the residents’ access to outdoor recreation, family visitation, classes, the infirmary, the chapel, and the library, the plaintiffs claimed.
