J&J $2 Million Benecol Class Settlement Gets Tentative Court Nod

A $2 million class settlement resolving allegations that Johnson & Johnson and McNeil Nutritionals LLC deceptively portrayed Benecol spread as free of trans fats won a California federal court’s early approval.

JoAnn Martinelli alleged Benecol Regular and Light spread labels were false because they contained trans fat from partially hydrogenated oils. The incorrect labels led her to buy the butter subsitute and pay a premium, she said.
