Interstate Travel for Abortions Protected in Senate Funding Bill

Federal law enforcement would be barred from investigating or prosecuting anyone who crosses state lines to have an abortion under a key Senate government funding bill, as Democrats aim to counter the effects of the Supreme Court’s decision ending the effective nationwide right to have an abortion.

Senate Democrats’ draft fiscal 2023 Commerce-Justice-Science funding bill released Thursday would bar federal officials from investigating or prosecuting anyone who crosses state lines for abortion access or anyone who helps another person do so. House Democrats also included the rider in their funding bill (H.R. 8256) over Republican objections.
