Insurer Must Defend Lawyer Accused of Sexually Assaulting Client

A professional liability insurer has a duty to defend a Maine attorney who is accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a female client, a federal district court said.

Westport Insurance Corporation is obligated to defend Clarence Spurling because the policy covers work-related acts, Judge Jon D. Levy of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine said Wednesday in granting Spurling’s motion for summary judgment on the matter.
