Homeland Security Loses Battle to Deport Protected Immigrants

Immigrants from Haiti, Sudan, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, who have been living in the U.S. for years with a temporary protected status designation, were able to halt the Department of Homeland Security from terminating the designation Oct. 3.

The immigrants showed they will be irreparably harmed if their designation is canceled and that they’re likely to win on the merits of their suit, Judge Edward M. Chen, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Northern District of California said.

The ruling calls into question the Trump administration’s efforts to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.
