Ho Chi Minh City Seeks Cleaner Approach to Mounting Waste

On some days, the illegal burning of trash on Vietnam’s roadsides becomes so noxious, commuters drive through russet-colored smoke, unable to see the road.

Vietnam wants a better solution than incineration for the mountains of waste that now pile up around the country, a byproduct of some of the highest economic growth rates in the world.

It has yet to face such unprecedented levels of waste, but analysts say Vietnam’s best bet is to focus on a handful of steps. These range from enforcing environmental laws on industrial parks—where most wastewater and trash are generated—to preventing leakage in waste management. ...
