Grassley Criticizes Durbin’s Openness to Ignoring Judge Norm (1)

Partisan tensions over one of the last remaining Senate norms for judicial nominations flared in the open between Judiciary Committee leadership on Wednesday.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) sharply criticized recent comments by committee Chair. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) in which he expressed an openness to moving forward with district picks in rare cases without support from home-state senators via the “blue slip” process.

Durbin told Bloomberg Government last month that he reserves the possibility to ignore home-state senator opposition of trial court nominees if that opposition isn’t merit-related.
