Ford Injury, Death Cases Shouldn’t Go to Supreme Court, Plaintiffs Say

High courts in Minnesota and Montana ruled correctly that Ford Motor Co. is subject to suit for in-state accidents involving vehicles originally sold elsewhere, an injured man and a woman’s estate told the U.S. Supreme Court.

The justices also shouldn’t take the cases because the rulings don’t conflict with those of other state supreme courts, or of federal appeals courts, the plaintiffs say in Nov. 20 briefs opposing Ford’s petition for review.

At issue is a court’s power to hear a case over a defendant based on the connection between the defendant’s contacts with the state and the plaintiff’s claims. ...
