Ford Asks Justices to Reinstate ‘Bedrock’ Import Tariff Rule (1)

Ford Motor Co. wants the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a case that approved-a tenfold increase in import duties on the company’s Transit Connect vans, and scaled back what legal steps importers in general can take to limit tariffs on their goods.

The automaker says that the underlying ruling broadly threatens the government’s practice of levying duties on goods based on their condition when they’re imported, a “bedrock principle” of U.S. trade law for over a century that is central to a number of international trade agreements, and introduces uncertainty for importers.
