DLA Piper Hires Diversity & Inclusion Officer From Johns Hopkins

June 12, 2019, 2:52 PM

DLA Piper has hired Johns Hopkins University Chief Diversity Officer Fenimore Fisher as its new diversity and inclusion officer to help with the firm’s hiring, retention, and promotion strategies.

The firm’s previous D&I Officer, Genhi Givings Bailey, left in October for Perkins Coie.

“Making diversity and inclusion a top priority of the firm has benefited our clients, our lawyers and staff, and our firm culture as a whole,” Roger Meltzer, DLA Piper’s global co-chairman and co-chairman for the Americas, said in a statement. Fisher “is ideally suited to usher our diversity and inclusion efforts into the next stage of the firm’s evolution,” Meltzer said

The legal industry is one of the least diverse, especially at the c-suite level, where efforts to retain and promote diverse employees have been largely unsuccessful.

Fisher, who’ll work in the firm’s Reston, Va., office starting July 15, has spent his entire professional career working on diversity and inclusion.

At Johns Hopkins, Fisher led diversity and inclusion initiatives for the university and also served as the primary steward of the Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion, which describes the university’s diversity-related priorities and commitments, a firm press release said.

Michael Bloomberg financially supports Johns Hopkins University, specifically student financial aid efforts. Bloomberg Law is operated by entities controlled by Michael Bloomberg.

Prior to that, Fisher worked for New York City, helping position it as a global leader in innovative and inclusive workplace practices, providing guidance and measurement to more than 80 mayoral and non-mayoral agencies to help align agency operations with the city’s key diversity and inclusion performance indicators.

Fisher also served as vice president of diversity and employment analysis for Walmart, as well as the executive director of the Rainbow/PUSH – Wall Street Project. He is an advisory board member of the National Multicultural Women’s Conference and has belonged to several groups committee to promoting diversity.

Fisher has received numerous diversity and inclusion awards, including the Collaborative Leadership Interagency Award from the New York City Police Department and the Multicultural Leadership Award from the National Diversity Council.
