CoreCivic Ordered to Pay Attorneys’ Fees in Defamation Suit

Candide Group LLC, a firm that promotes socially responsible investing, may collect attorneys’ fees for staving off a private prison company’s lawsuit over publications criticizing the company’s role in separating immigrant children from their parents at the border, a federal court said.

California’s Anti-SLAPP law’s provision automatically awarding attorneys’ fees to a prevailing party is substantive in nature and thus applies in federal court, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said.
