Comcast Must Defend Spot Cable Advertising Monopoly Suit

Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable provider, must defend itself against claims that it uses its market power to muscle out competitors in the $5.4 billion-a-year spot cable advertising business (Viamedia, Inc. v. Comcast Corp., 2016 BL 368900, N.D. Ill., No. 16-cv-5486, 11/4/16).

Viamedia Inc. alleged in its complaint that Comcast uses its position as the largest multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) to favor its own captive advertising representation company, Comcast Spotlight Inc. Viamedia alleges damages of at least $75 million from being excluded from advertising marketplaces in large local TV markets controlled by Comcast.
