California State Bar Establishes UPL Office
While Renewing Bid for More Statutory Power

The California State Bar is launching a new unit to investigate the unauthorized practice of the law and is working with a state lawmaker to reintroduce legislation that would give the bar authority to go after nonlawyers who present themselves as attorneys, Executive Director Joseph Dunn said Jan. 23.

The bar’s unauthorized practice of law oversight committee Jan. 16 approved a plan to implement the bar’s UPL enforcement, including hiring for four new positions, Dunn told Bloomberg BNA. The Board of Trustees last October approved creating a small standalone unit to investigate and work up UPL cases for filing.
