Attorneys Sanctioned for Hiring Suspended Lawyer as Paralegal

Two New York lawyers will serve an 18-month suspension for hiring a suspended attorney to work as a paralegal at their law firm.

A “disbarred or suspended attorney who aspires to employment as a clerk or paralegal for an attorney or law firm invites ‘ethical peril’” because of the likelihood that attorney will end up engaging in the unauthorized practice of law, the Supreme Court of New York, Appellate Division, First Department, said Tuesday.

That’s what happened when Bruce D. Friedberg and Edan E. Pinkas hired Eric Gonchar to work for them, the appeals court said.
